Images of these 'big circles' have recently been spreading virally on the internet, though the initial research into these structures began in the 1920's. However these Ariel images of the structures reveal the vast size and geometric shapes of the structures.
From looking at the images of the shapes it is clear that it would have taken a great amount of effort and work to construct these shapes so perfectly and to calculate how they could be as geometrically correct as possible. Therefore this begs the question, why and what do they mean?
This is what has drawn me to want to research these more as another example of the phenomena (like cairn and megaliths) which demonstrate immense human investment. I find myself troubled with the question of who made them and what inspired them to do so, whether it was for a practical purpose or a form of spiritual worship. They offer a great insight into nature, being not only the natural world but also human nature.
A article about these states that the 'Big circles' Contain 'low walls of uncut boulders, most of the circles are between a few meters and about 50 meters in diameter, though some are as big as 100 meters in diameter, Kennedy wrote. A few surround some sort of megalithic structures, but most are empty in the middle and “their purpose is unclear."'

This uncertainty and aspect of the unknown makes these rock circles more intriguing each heavy rock will have been placed for a specific intent, though we may now never truly understand what this was.
From a artistic perspective I also find the big circles very compelling as sculptural forms and shapes as they dissect through the landscape creating a sense of balance and harmony in their symmetrical shapes. Furthermore they allow a relationship to the romantic idea of the sublime and awe inspiring to be experienced.
