Richard Deacon and Tony Cragg are two contemporary sculpture whose work manipulates materials to create large scale sculptural forms. I find the way in which these examples pieces are dynamic and create the illusion of movement thought they are static pieces. They both have interesting textures and surfaces which are aesthetically pleasing as they are ordered and repetitive, bringing a balance to the curved and complex forms.

Deacon's piece is complex and present craftsmanship and knowledge of materials in order to manipulate them to create his large-scale expressive forms. The continuous of his sculpture creates a sense of illusion and fantasy, as the form seems impossible due to conventional the materials constraints we would associate with wood.

Cragg's solid forms are contrasting to Deacon's as their mass and density in extremely prominent as they are cast in solid forms. However this is contrasted by a sense of movement by the undulating form and patterns, which suggest movement and liquidity. Furthermore as they balance on points a sense of balance and harmony is created which adds to the fluid properties.

Both of these artists offer a inspirational insight into the capabilities of material manipulation to create pieces which defy the traditional constraints of the materials to create innovative and interesting pieces.
